More info released from deadly motorcycle crash on Hwy 62
Two people were killed in a motorcycle crash on State Route 62 and North Indian Canyon Drive Saturday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at about 7:25 p.m. when a man on a 2007 Harley Davidson crossed into the #2 lane and clipped the right side of a 1998 Jeep. Officers said the man was traveling at a high rate of speed.
The driver and the passenger of the Harley were both ejected. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where he later died.
The identities of the crash victims have not been released at this time.
CHP said both the driver and passenger were wearing novelty helmets which were not Department of Transportation approved. The factors leading up to the crash are still under investigation. It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role.
CHP stopped traffic on SR 62 in that area just after 8 o’clock Saturday night, leaving many drivers with no choice but to wait it out.
News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 heard from several viewers who said they were stuck in traffic for well over an hour. At one point the traffic jam on the main route to and from high desert communities was three miles long.
All lanes on SR 62 were open by 10:30 pm.
