33-year-old man killed in crash after fleeing CHP
Supect dies after fleeing CHPA 33-year-old man was killed after crashing into a car in Palm Desert while trying to evade officers with the California Highway Patrol Friday afternoon. Cal Fire responded to the collision near Washington Street and Avenue of the States just before 1 p.m.
According to Officer Mike Radford with CHP, patrol cars were trying to pull the suspect over after he failed to yield at Washington Street and Harris Street, just south of Country Club Drive.
When officers arrived to Avenue of the States, the car they were chasing had crashed into a car stopped at the intersection; that car burst into flames and then careened into two other cars, Radford said.
The officer who was pursuing the suspect pulled him from the car, but he died on scene. The man hasn’t been identified yet.
Six other people were involved in the crash but only three suffered minor injuries.
Southbound Washington Street is closed between Avenue 48 and Avenue of the States while crews remain on scene. Radford said the road is expected to be closed until about 5:30 p.m. Northbound traffic on Washington Street is open but slow-going.
Drivers should avoid the area during that time. CHP recommends alternate routes such as Jefferson Street and Cook Street.
