Indio Standoff Ends In Arrest
On Saturday around 10:07 p.m., Indio police responded to a family disturbance call at the Mountain View Cottage Apartments at 46299 Arabia in Indio. That’s when 37 year old Benjamin Brewer threatened officers with a handgun. Brewer then barricaded himself in the apartment. He was alone inside the apartment. Brewer is the subject of a restraining order, has several outstanding warrants and is currently on probation stemming from a domestic violence conviction.
Officers took cover, surrounded the residence, evacuated surrounding apartments and Desert Regional SWAT was called to the scene and started assessing the situation.
During the eight-hour standoff, Brewer was lighting small fires inside the apartment, breaking the windows of the apartment and throwing objects out of the apartment at officer. Around 6:00 a.m. Sunday, officers finally was able to convince Brewer to disarm himself and leave the apartment. Mr. Brewer was immediately taken into custody without incident.
Brewer was taken to John F. Kennedy Hospital for injuries he received while breaking items in the apartment. There were no other injuries reported during the incident.
Police searched the residence pursuant to the search warrant and the area surrounding the apartment. Officers located a flare gun loaded with a .22 caliber round. The investigation is ongoing.
