Man ID’d after being hit by vehicle on Fred Waring Drive

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a vehicle on Fred Waring Drive near Clinton Street. Officials with Cal Fire said the collision happened around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The coroner’s office identified the man as 73-year-old Geronimo Meza.

Dan Marshall with the Indio Police Department said Meza died on scene. The driver was traveling westbound and Meza was crossing Fred Waring Drive when the collision occurred. Police said he wasn’t using a cross walk.

Marshall said the driver did pull over and is cooperating with the investigation. Drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the collision but the exact cause is still under investigation.

The intersection west of Clinton Street was shut down to traffic while police investigated.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will have updated information as the police department continues to investigate the collision.
