Hot weekend ahead with triple digit temps in store

The first triple digit temperatures of the year may be heading our way this weekend.

These high temperatures can be very dangerous for children and for seasonal visitors.

“It’s really hot, unusually hot for this time of the year,” said Pam Grossman of Palm Desert. She brought her daughter to the Palm Desert Aquatic Center to beat the heat.

“It’s going to be very hot, I encourage people to come out here and get wet,” said Ozzy Lua who swims at the Aquatic Center often.

In order to stay safe from the heat and the sun, you’ll have to do more than just take a dip in the pool.

“It’s a misnomer that swimming is good, kids still perspire, they still lose their fluids and so we have to keep those us especially the electrolytes and things like that,” said Bob Krom. He coaches the Palm Desert Swim Club.

Snowbirds visiting the Coachella Valley on spring break could be in a lot of danger if they are not prepared for the triple digit temps.

“We’re used to 50 degrees and lots of rain right now, we’re feeling double that,” said Natalie Levin. She’s visiting from Boise, ID.

“My family has no idea how we can live here through the summer, and this is nothing compared to the 120 that we get sometimes over the summer,” said Jackie Fenson.

Another danger that comes with heat is electrical fires, already this week we have had some fires start after someone tried to kick on their air conditioner.

“Anytime we get into the summer months, it’s always a good idea to have your electrical systems checked out, especially your heating and air condition systems,”said CAL FIRE Battlion Chief, Daniel Talbot.

All the dangers aside there are still plenty of ways to beat the heat.

“Usually the first triple digit of the school year we bring the kids out for frozen yogurt,” said Fenson.
