Dana Hobart assumes role as mayor of Rancho Mirage
In April of each year, the new Mayor of Rancho Mirage is appointed based on the longest term of consecutive service on the city council without having served as mayor. This policy, initiated and drafted by Mr. Hobart, was presented to the city’s electorate in 2004. Voters overwhelmingly approved the measure, thus assuring that all council members have an equal opportunity to serve as mayor. On April 16, 2015, Mr. Hobart became Mayor for the fourth time. He previously served as Mayor in 2003, 2007 and 2011. Mr. Hobart was first elected to City Council in 2002 and was reelected by substantial margins in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
Dana Hobart has initiated a number of meaningful projects during his tenure on the council, including:
Initiating the elimination of overhead electric lines throughout the Tamarisk, Magnesia Falls and the other communities living with dangerous lines over their property.
Using Redevelopment funds, the City bore the entire expense.
Initiating the effort to defeat the County’s plan to eventually extend the City’s borders by 4,000 acres north of I-10, adjacent to Thousand Palms.
Initiating the process of turning 260 acres of Section 19 vacant land (on the east side of Bob Hope Drive from Ramon Rd. to Dinah Shore Dr.) into what many believe will become the City’s future commercial center, assuring the City’s financial stability for decades to come.
Initiating the agreement with the Agua Caliente Tribe to annex their Casino and Hotel into the City, resulting in about $400,000 per year flowing to the City.
Initiating the elimination of employee “pension spiking” practices and reforming other pension and related benefits which currently, and in the future, will save the City significant sums in pension and other costs.
Initiating the effort to completely discharge the City’s unfunded pension liability, which cost the city in excess of $500,000 per year in avoidable interest.
Initiating the Rancho Mirage Historic Preservation Commission.
Co-founded the City Golf Club, offering residents great courses at reasonable prices.
