Heroin found in backpack at Hwy. 86 checkpoint

Border Patrol agents discovered a backpack containing several pounds of heroin on a commercial bus at the Highway 86 checkpoint Friday night.

Nobody was arrested because agents couldn’t identify the owner of the backpack.

According to the release, agents were conducting an immigration check on the bus at about 9:15 p.m. They noticed the backpack placed in the overhead storage area, sitting away from all of the passengers. They asked for the owner to claim the backpack but nobody came forward.

After searching the backpack, agents found 4.8 lbs. of heroin with an estimated street value of more than $57,600. The DEA is handling the investigation.

Last fiscal year, agents said they seized more than 186 pounds of heroin.
