Hikers rescue stranded dog in La Quinta

A dog is safe and sound after community members and animal lovers rescued her from the top of a mountain near the La Quinta Cove Saturday.

Neighbors heard the dog’s cries since Tuesday so a group of hikers decided to take matters into their own hands. They scaled the mountain, bringing with them ropes and water hoping to save the dog they named Roxy.

The climb was steep and not easy, but by the afternoon they made it down safely with Roxy.

“I think we all cried,” said Loretta Gilmore, in La Quinta.

“It tells me that we’re surrounded by a community of dog lovers and I really love that and social media really works,” said Christine Madruga in La Quinta.

Roxy was taken to a veterinarian to get examined. Community members are donating money for the vet bill. If no one claims her, hiker Chuck Roby plans to keep her.
