Coachella launches sidewalk project to revitalize city
From new murals to new sidewalks the City of Coachella is revitalizing the town.
The city installed 1,000 feet of new sidewalk on Shady Lane across from Dateland Park to make it accessible and safe for walkers and people in wheelchairs. The project cost $140,000 — paid for by a federalgrant.
“Beautiful. This is a big improvement for Coachella,” said Coachella resident Frank Aroz.
“Without the sidewalk it was basically dirt. It wasn’t paved, it wasn’t clean,” said Mayor Steven Hernandez. “Now we have a nice sidewalk that connects one of the oldest communities and makes it a lot more walkable.”
The city will complete another $200,000 stretch of new sidewalk on Avenue 48 and Van Buren in the next couple of months.
Hernandez said it’s all an effort to advance health, safety and tourism in the City of Coachella.
Aroz said there’s more to get done, but the sidewalk project is a start.
“There’s a lot of improvement, but we’re getting there. I’ve always been in Coachella and this is my town,” Aroz said.
