Helicopter crashes at Riverside Municipal Airport

A helicopter manned by a student pilot crashed Thursday at Riverside Municipal Airport, but neither the pilot nor a passenger on board were hurt, firefighters said.

The crash happened at 8:54 a.m., when a Robinson R22 copter that was taken out for a training run went down on one of the airport’s runways, said Riverside Battalion Chief Michael Staley.

Neither of the two people in the helicopter were injured though, and Riverside city firefighters were able to quickly clear the downed chopper from the runway, Staley said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
