Former officer admits to stealing from youth sports organization
A former Indio police officer pleaded guilty Thursday to embezzling more than $5,000 from the youth sports organization where he worked as treasurer and was immediately sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service
Gregory Michael Siqueiros, 33, of Indio, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of grand theft during his scheduled felony settlement conference in Indio.
Siqueiros was treasurer of the Indio Youth Sports Association, but was reported by association president Daniel Watson in the summer of 2014, after Watson suspected Siqueiros was pocketing cash.
According to court documents prepared by Detective Jason Polanco, Watson
became concerned when Siqueiros claimed the league was low on money, despite
increased numbers of children playing in the league’s baseball and softball
programs.
Siqueiros was responsible for making deposits of checks and cash from sign-up fees and fundraisers to the league’s bank account, but allegedly was unable to account for thousands of dollars in cash.
During a September 2014 interview with Siqueiros at the Indio police station, Polcano wrote that Siqueiros “admitted to taking $300 that he claimed was owed him.”
Siqueiros was employed as an officer with Indio Police for just 14 months. He was released from the department in 2008 while still on probationary status.
In addition to his other probation terms, Siqueiros was ordered to not have any direct or indirect contact with Watson.
