Mandatory vaccinations in effect at CA, K-12 schools

Senate bill No. 277, a new vaccine law that eliminates exemption based on personal beliefs, is in effect for this upcoming school year. All students must be vaccinated according to their grade level by the first day of school.

Jane Mills, director of student services for PSUSD says that students who have started their vaccinations will be admitted into school, but must follow up with an up-to-date vaccination card by the following deadline, specified by the district. Students who have not started the vaccination process will not be able to attend school.

Families who wish not to immunize their child are offered a public, independent schooling option, which is provided by the school district.

Dr. Brian Petrie from UCR/Desert Regional says that it is vital that every student is vaccinated.

“It’s very important. Every kid should be vaccinated. We’re not only protecting the kids, but their families that they go home to,” said Petrie.
