Dog dies from heat exhaustion after being locked inside vehicle in Palm Springs

A 39-year-old man was arrested Sunday for allegedly leaving his dog locked inside a car for at least three hours, leading to the dog’s death from heat exhaustion.

Officers with the Palm Springs Police Department said they were called to the 1800 block of Smoke Tree Lane at about 2:40 p.m. That’s when several hysterical people took them to a locked car where the dog was seen motionless inside.

Officers were also met by the owner of the car at that time, whom officers identified as Palm Springs resident Brent White. White opened a car door for officers but the dog had already passed away, officers said in a news release.

Authorities said the temperature outside was 70 degrees Fahrenheit at the time and the interior of the car was well over 86 degrees. The dog was taken to a local emergency clinic where its body temperature registered to be 104 degrees.

Officers determined the dog was left inside the locked car with no air and was out of water for at least three hours before dying from heat exhaustion.

White was arrested on a charge of causing great bodily injury to an animal left in an unattended vehicle. He was booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

Authorities say you should never take your animals for granted and you should take precautions to keep them safe at all times.
