Indio Police patrolling for DUIs Sunday night

Indio Police officers will be out Sunday night through early Monday morning patrolling for drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Officers said they will be out throughout the city from 7 p.m. Sunday night until 2 a.m. Monday morning, in areas with high rates of DUI crashes and arrests.

They said funding for this operation is from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reminding everyone to call 911 to report a drunk driver.

Officers said drivers are encouraged to download the Designated Driver VIP, or “DDVIP,” free mobile app for Android or iPhone. The DDVIP app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver, from free non-alcoholic drinks to free appetizers and more. The feature-packed app even has social media tie-ins and even a tab for the non-DD to call Uber, Lyft or Curb.
