Cathedral City’s first mayor passes away at 89
Cathedral City’s first mayor, who died April 14 at the age of 89, will be eulogized tomorrow at a graveside service at Desert Memorial Park.
Rena “Pat” Murphy became the city’s mayor in 1981 and served multiple city council terms until December 1992. She also was a past president of the League of Cities.
“We are saddened to learn of her passing, but are mindful of the legacy she left behind,” said current Mayor Stan Henry. “Pat Murphy played a pivotal role in Cathedral City becoming its own municipality. She and others within the Cathedral City Chamber of Commerce organized the community and led the vote for Cathedral City’s founding. It is our hope that her family finds comfort as they reflect on all the wonderful accomplishments she made throughout her life.”
The city’s flag was lowered to half-staff in her memory.
Murphy is survived by her son John, daughter Karen and three grandchildren.
The Tuesday service at Desert Memorial Park, 31705 Da Vall Drive, will begin at 10:30 a.m.
