Collisions, traffic slow holiday travelers
Roadways in our area have been dangerous and deadly as people get behind the wheel for a long Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Accidents and traffic have been a major problem for drivers.
A pickup truck loaded with a family in the cab and a jet ski in the back slammed into the median in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Cook Street Friday afternoon. The truck hit with such force, wood from the center divider shot into traffic in westbound lanes.
Police prepare for holiday travel rush
One driver said he was almost decapitated when a chunk of wood shot through his windshield.
“I actually was wiping splinters out, but I didn’t get hurt and that is the most important thing of course,” said John Cattermole, who was traveling from Arizona.
There were only minor injuries with this crash. A person died in a crash near Desert Center on Friday morning and another person was taken to the hospital. Drivers say hitting the highway is tough.
“The roads have been very congested and busy but I am so glad to just be heading out of here,” said Lesley Cuahuizo, who is traveling to Mexico from Los Angeles.
A record number of people are expected to be traveling this holiday weekend.
