Manhattan in the Desert located in Palm Springs was closed over the weekend after being shut down by the health department. The restaurant will re-open Tuesday.

A viewer sent us a message saying the restaurant has been closed since Saturday.

The restaurant received a C grade from the health department after a surprise inspection on Friday.

Dottie Merki with Riverside County Department of Environmental Health tells us in a statement that the restaurant “had several refrigerators that were not working properly. Which means they were not holding the foods temp below 41°.”

“Our goal is to always get every restaurant reopened as soon as possible, but of course the health of the public is always our first concern,” says Merki.

Manhattan in the Desert owner Jamie Pinto tells us that the Health Department did find some issues with some walk in refrigerators but that they had them repaired right away, unfortunately the Health Department can’t sign off on the repairs until Tuesday.

Jamie explains “We had a surprise health inspection on one of the most humid days of the year. There was a minor problem with a couple of our walk ins and they were repaired by 5:30 pm on Friday, but we could not get the Health Department to wait and sign off on the fix. Because of the weekend and the Holiday we had to wait until Tuesday to get the Health Department to return and OK the walk ins.

Jamie also admits that it was a difficult weekend to be closed, Labor Day weekend being on of the busier in the Valley. They took advantage of the closure to do a full cleaning and some maintenance.
