Local gas tax signature drive to begin in Indio
A local signature drive to end California’s latest gasoline tax was set to begin in Indio Monday afternoon with an event where gasoline will be on sale for $1.99 a gallon.
Members of the East Valley Republican Women Federated and other repeal activists will gather for a rally to collect gas tax repeal signatures.
The statewide excise tax on gasoline jumped by 12 cents per gallon to 41.7 cents in November. For diesel fuel, the excise tax rose by 20 cents per gallon to 36 cents, and the sales tax went up to 13 percent from 9 percent on top of local taxes.
Gas station owner Nachhattar Chandi is lowering prices of regular unleaded gasoline during Monday’s launch event from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at his Arco Station in Indio to bring attention to the signature drive. The station is located at 42334 Jefferson Street.
Motorists will also be able to sign the gas tax repeal petition at other gas stations that Mr. Chandi owns in the region.Critics say the massive Gas Tax that will cost Californian families more than $700 per year.
Carl DeMaio, Chairman of the Reform California and the Gas Tax Repeal Initiative says the organization still needs to collect another 200,000 signatures. The group has already obtained more than 400,000 of the 500,000 minimum required to qualify the tax repeal for a statewide public ballot.
