Desert Riders equestrian club takes to the trails once again
Nearly 90 years ago, the Desert Riders first took to the Coachella Valley. The equestrian riding club was formally created on Nov. 31, 1931, and not much has changed for the trailblazing enthusiasts, at least when it comes to their preferred mode of transportation.
“Where else but Palm Springs can one find so many good and safe trails leading to and from mountains, canyons, or palm groves?” reads The History of the Desert Riders, “Views are unmatchable in all directions. The Desert Riders are proud of their trails, and hope that they will be used and appreciated by all who enjoy the wild beauty of mountains and desert.”
Tuesday at 9:30.a.m., the Desert Riders hit the old dusty trail once again, taking on the Bud Furer Trail in Palm Springs for their annual ride. About 20 riders departed from the Furer Trailhead Tuesday at 9:30.a.m., the Desert Riders hit the old dusty trail once again, taking on the Bud a founding year of 1939.
“The Bud Furer trail is one of the most unique that we have inner-city Palm Springs,” says Desert Rider Jason Mascarenas. “People at the golf course we go by, they love the horses, they think it’s magical, and I just answer, ‘Well, that’s Palm Springs.'”
The Desert Riders and the Desert Riders Trail Fund play a crucial role in trail maintenance in the Smoke Tree Mountains and the surrounding area. Many of the trails that now weave throughout the valley were blazed by some of the Desert Riders decades ago.
