Two killed in Thermal crash

Two people were killed in Thermal when a BMW crashed into several palm trees early Wednesday morning.

Police and firefighters were called to the intersection of 54th Avenue and Jackson Street, just west of Coachella, at 2:26 a.m.

The California Highway Patrol says the driver lost control of the westbound vehicle, which then went airborne and struck five to six palm trees.

Two men in the car were pronounced dead at the scene, according to April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman, April Newman.

Neither of the dead was wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, according to police. Authorities had no word on the men’s identities early Wednesday morning.

The CHP was investigating the crash and trying to determine its cause.

The Intersection of Avenue 54 and Jackson Street remained open to traffic, but Avenue 54 east of Jackson Street was closed for the investigation and clean up for several hours.
