The longest day of the summer is also a celebration of the tallest animal on the planet.

Many locals visited the Living Desert for World Giraffe Day. The park was filled with kids and families who were busy feeding the giraffes and learning about ways to save the tallest animal in the world.

“Giraffes are going through what we have been calling a silent extinction, which means nobody really knew giraffe numbers were declining in the wild. We are one of many zoos across the world actually this is a worldwide giraffe event, so other zoos and giraffe organizations all across the world that are celebrating today in hopes that we can raise awareness so that those giraffe numbers can increase in the wild,” said Roxanna Breitigan of the Living Desert.

The giraffe population has declined by nearly 80% since the 90’s. A herd of eight giraffes is currently living at the zoo.
