El Centro Border Patrol arrests 2 previously convicted sex offenders
El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested two previously deported sex offenders on Wednesday. Josue Mendoza-Lopez and Javier Alvaro-Penate were arrested during separate encounters with Border Patrol near Calexico. They are the 25th and 26th sex offenders to be arrested by El Centro Sector Border Patrol in the fiscal year.
At 11:30 a.m., Calexico Border Patrol agents arrested Josue Mendoza-Lopez after they observed him illegally crossing the border east of downtown Calexico. Record checks revealed that the 35-year-old citizen of Guatemala was a previously convicted sex offender.
Mendoza-Lopez served one year in jail and two years probation after being convicted of a charge of Sexual Contact-No Consent. He also has two prior convictions of Eluding a Peace Officer and Driving Under the Influence.
At 10 p.m., Border Patrol agents arrested a group of people attempting to cross the border three miles east of downtown Calexico. One of the individuals, Alvaro-Penate, was revealed to be a convicted sex offender after a records check.
The 38-year-old Mexican national served a 150-day prison sentence along with three-years probation after being convicted of “Lewdness with a Child under 14.”
“Our community can rest easy knowing that our agents will always be there to arrest criminals such as these,” said El Centro Sector Special Operations Supervisor Miguel A. Garcia.
Both suspects remain in federal custody pending prosecution.
