Border patrol arrests two convicted felons over the weekend

Border patrol agents arrest man convicted of attempted murder and a previously deported aggravated felon over the weekend near Calexico.

Mexican citizen Juan Carlos Avalos-Padilla, 50, was arrested in an area east of Calexico on Friday at around 11 p.m. after he illegally entered the United States, according to a news release by the El Centro Sector Border Patrol.

According to border patrol, records check revealed that Avalos-Padilla has an extensive criminal history that includes a conviction for attempted murder. The felony conviction for second degree attempted murder occurred in Riverside County in August 2010. Avalos was sentenced to seven years prison for the conviction.

The second arrest happened Sunday at around 7 p.m. at the Highway 111 checkpoint in Niland. Border patrol agents said they stopped a vehicle after the driver attempted to go around the checkpoint to avoid inspection. Following a field interview, agents said they were able to determine that the occupants were Mexican citizens without proper documentation allowing them to enter or remain in the United States.

Back at the station, agents ran record checks, which revealed that one of the individuals, Ivan Partida-Valdez, a 37-year-old Mexican citizen, is a previously deported aggravated felon.

The news release revealed that Partida-Valdez has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1994 and includes numerous convictions for aggravated burglary and three separate jail sentences. Each prison sentence was at least one year long.

“Preventing these types of criminals from committing more heinous crimes in our community is part of our duties as agents, and we will continue protecting America’s frontline every day,” said El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez.

Both men will remain in federal custody pending prosecution for violation of criminal law.
