New elementary school in Indio opens its doors for the first time
A brand new elementary school in Indio opened its door for the first time today.
Thursday will be the first day of classes at the brand new Richard Oliphant Elementary School and students were excited.
“I was excited to go to this school because it’s different and new,” said Isabella Diaz, a fourth-grade student at the school.
As school principal campus Jeff Hisgenis told KESQ & CBS Local 2 the campus is state of the art featuring flexible seating in every classroom with learning commons.
In addition to its modern architecture, Hisgen says each class is equipped with large format display screens for teachers to create lesson plans digitally. Students are also provided with Google Chromebooks to access class work from home.
“The opportunities for learning for the children are amazing. We have incredible technology. We have just a whole different environment everything here is interactive and can be broken down and put together in different ways,” said Dannette Shipley, a first-grade teacher at the school.
It’s a concept that parents approve of.
“It’s actually great that our kids have the tools that they can to log into their Google classroom from home, really anywhere, and have the device on hand. To take what they have in the classroom home with them, it kind of extends their learning,” said Carrie Carnas, the parent of a first-grade student at the school.
Parents and students got to walk the halls of the new school and meet their teachers today. Tomorrow gates will open at 7:45 a.m. for the first day of school.
