Bianca Andreescu and Domonic Thiem make history, crowned BNP Paribas Open champions

History was made on Sunday with two first-time tournament champions. On the women’s side, 18-year-old wildcard entry Bianca Andreescu defeated Angelique Kerber in a 3-set thriller. While on the men’s side, Austrian talent Dominic Thiem took down the great Roger Federer after being down the first set.

Andreescu becomes the first wildcard to win this tournament and was really the story of the week with her cinderella run. It is without question the best win and playing of her young career.

“It’s been a crazy ride, truly a Cinderella story. Naomi did this last year & now to be able to have my name in front of so many amazing champions, means the world to me,” said Andreescu.

As for Thiem, this his break through moment as well. It is the biggest win of his career and his first Masters 1000 championship.

“It feels just unreal what happened in this ten days during the tournament,” said Thiem.

Both Andreescu and Thiem were underodgs in their respective final, but both leave the Indian Wells as winners and the new BNP Paribas Open champions.
