La Quinta gang member arrested for gasoline attack

A La Quinta gang member was in custody Thursday morning, accused of assaulting a person and dousing them with gasoline.

Police say a documented street gang member, Mario Zamarripa, 39, tried to run from deputies Wednesday when he was located but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody, according to Sgt. Paul Heredia of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The attack occurred on Tuesday.

Members of the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force conducted a follow-up investigation about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 51000 block of Avenida Martinez.

Heredia says Zamarripa was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a caustic chemical and other violations and booked at the County jail in Indio.

Police did not release any other details of the assault or condition of the victim.
