Suspected drunk driver critically injured in crash near Mecca
A suspected drunken driver was critically injured today when he slammed his vehicle into the back of a pickup truck west of Mecca, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol officers received word of a two-car collision at 5:37 a.m. on Avenue 66 just west of state Route 86.
The driver of a 1996 GMC Sonoma heading east on Avenue 66 apparently failed to notice a GMC Sierra stopped at a red light at Route 86 and rear-ended the pickup, according to CHP Officer Jacquelene Quintero.
The driver of the Sonoma, 51-year-old Miguel Rafael, received major injuries and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center and being held under arrest, Quintero said.
The driver of the Sierra, a 67-year-old man, sustained minor injuries, Quintero said.
