Two women killed in a traffic collision on Avenue 66 and Highway 86 in Mecca
A traffic collision involving a big rig and two sedans was reported before midnight Thursday at Avenue 66 and Highway 86 in Mecca, resulting in two deaths, both adult women. The two victims, one of the drivers and the passenger of the other vehicle died from their injuries at the scene.
According to the CHP, the rig truck had collided with the two Chevy sedans, as the three vehicles were going in the same direction at the intersection of the two roads.
One vehicle then overturned and landed on its roof. Firefighters were present as the other sedan was seen rolled over and caught fire as well.
One patient was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with major injuries. The two additional patients were evaluated at the scene but had declined further treatment. The driver of the big rig was not injured.
At 2:29 a.m. Avenue 66 southbound lanes were completely blocked and Highway 86 southbound diverted onto Ave 66 east and west.
CHP says the cause is still under investigation.
