The Berger Foundation Iceplex hosts an adaptive skating event for people with developmental disabilities
The Berger Foundation hosted its first adaptive skate event at the Iceplex in thousand palms.
Local families say It was a really good time being out on the ice and staying cool, but overall, seeing those smiles and their family members face their fears on the ice.
Almost 80 people came out to participate throughout the day. Officials say only 52 registered, but people called in to get on the list on the morning of the open skate.
There were a variety of coaches from the Iceplex, Firebirds, and SoCal Adaptive Sports.
One young woman who participated says the coaches empower folks like her to be athletes.
"It's important for us as individuals to have things like this out there," says Megan Murano, a valley resident and participant in adaptive sports. "So we can all play sports just like everyone else. But we have to learn a little differently than everyone else.
SoCal Adaptive Sports has partnered with multiple cities and organizations in the valley. The director says the event aims to create an inclusive environment and give people choices.
If you missed Sunday's skating, Monday there will be another clinic. It will be an adaptive sports basketball clinic at the civic center park in Palm Desert.
There is an "adaptive skate" session at the Berger Ice Complex on Sunday from 12 noon until 2 p.m. for physically challenged kids, adults, and their families.
This event is a partnership between SoCal Adaptive Sports and the Berger Foundation to bring inclusive activities to the valley. The Iceplex team says, "Skating is for everyone."
The event is a pre-register opportunity, but they have closed registration. If you want to participate in more skating events like this one, contact SoCal Adaptive Sports.
