Roads flooded out by Friday’s storm begin to reopen

A storm hit the Coachella Valley Friday afternoon, bringing flooding to roadways, particularly in the eastern part of the region.

Viewer video showed flooding in North Shore, an area that was getting hit particularly hard.

The California Highway Patrol on Friday responded to reports of a washed out bridge near the Salton Sea at the Imperial County/Riverside County line on SR 111.

Nearly 600 customers were without power in Thermal late Friday night.

Coachella Valley High School canceled its football game Friday night due to the storm.

News Channel 3's Samantha Lomibao reported out in Indio, which was also being hit with flooding.

Palm Springs Road Closures:

  • Gene Autry was shut down at the Whitewater Wash but reopened Saturday afternoon.
  • E Vista Chino was also reopened Saturday afternoon.
  • Indian Canyon remained closed due to Tropical Storm Hilary that hit two weeks earlier.

The Indio Police Department on Friday asked drivers to avoid the following roads due to flash flooding:

  • Hwy 111 and Jackson St
  • Hwy 111 and Clinton St
  • Hwy 111 and Monroe St
  • Monroe St and Ave 48
  • Monroe St and Fred Waring Ave
  • Jackson and Ave 48
  • Jackson St and Carreon Blvd.
  • Ave 48 and Oasis St
  • Tahquitz Ave and Sun Gold St.

La Quinta also issued several road closures:

Flooding at Bear Creek in the La Quinta Cove

Coachella reported these road closures on Friday:

  • Cesar Chavez at Avenues 50, 51 & 52
  • 6th Street from Palm Street to Vine Street
  • Avenue 48 from Van Buren to Grapefruit Blvd
  • Cielo Victoria at Avenue 48
  • Avenue 50 at the Whitewater Channel

The city of Coachella said Avenue 50 at the Whitewater Channel would be the only intersection that would remain closed Sunday afternoon.

Desert Hot Springs on Saturday announced the following reopenings:

  • Pierson Blvd. from Indian Canyon Rd. to Karen Ave
  • Little Morongo between Mission Lakes Blvd. and Pierson Blvd.

A FLASH FLOOD WARNING was in place until 8:15 p.m. Friday for the entire Coachella Valley. Residents were asked to not drive on a flooded road.
