Riverside County surpasses 10,000 coronavirus cases

Riverside County officially surpassed 10,000 positive coronavirus cases on Thursday.

"The 10,000-case figure is a stark reminder that coronavirus is still active in the community and we need to continue the health practices that previously helped us flatten the curve," said Kim Saruwatari, director of Riverside University Health System-Public Health.

The county saw 329 new cases in the past 24 hours. The total number of cases is 10,240. This is the third straight day the county saw over 300 new cases.

There were new 5 deaths reported as well, bringing the total number of deaths in the county to 377.

County health officials announced that they expected an increase in cases

"We forecasted sporadic outbreaks through the summer, and those forecasts so far are coming true," said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County health officer. "It’s time to think about what the fall will bring, and those initial estimates aren’t good. If we’re not observing social distancing and facial coverings, two things that helped before and are helping now, we’re going to lose the progress we’ve made."

Current projections show that the county expects there to be 10,874 cases and 489 deaths by June 15.

5,714 patients have recovered, up from 5,563 on Thursday.

There are currently 232 (up 5 from yesterday) patients hospitalized, with 71 (down by 1) in the ICU.
