Local non-profit promoting helmet safety wins $20K grant
A local non-profit organization dedicated to keeping children safe by providing helmets, received a $20,000 grant on Friday morning.
The 4Shayj Foundation received the “Best Pitch” grant from Thursday’s annual Regional Access Project (RAP) conference in Cathedral City.
The non-profit was founded by Shaun Clark, who was at a La Quinta Middle School teaching students the importance of helmet safety.
Just over two years ago his son was struck and killed while skateboarding in Indio.
“It’s unbelievable how many kids are injured every day while riding a skateboard or bicycle without having a helmet on. There are 5 kids every minute who either die or receive brain damage while not wearing a helmet, our son lost his life,” Clark said.
Clark hopes the foundation changes the way helmet safety is perceived by students in elementary and middle schools.
