The school's been standing for more than 120 years, making it one of Coachella Valley Unified District's oldest.
This new renovation added three additional soccer fields and a softball field.
"We were really excited because we heard that there was going to be new game opportunities like more volleyball courts, more tetherball because me and my friends really enjoyed to the tether ball," said sixth grade student, Jaycee.
The school’s principal hopes the new space will help students explore new interests and get a change of scenery while learning.
"We want our students to have opportunities come out and bring their learning outside, draw on the ground, right a number line, use a fraction bar and just really be able to come outside in the beautiful weather and take in fresh air and while they're learning," said Mecca Elementary Principal, Summer Martinez.
The new shaded learning space features artificial turf with seating areas and cooled water fountains that serve as a cooling station.
It also features solar panels that are part of a district wide project.
