Lincoln Fire contained in Mecca

Five days after it sparked, the Lincoln Fire has been contained.

The blaze broke out Friday near the intersection of Lincoln Street and Avenue 68 in Mecca Wednesday evening, according to Cal Fire.

The fire was reported at 2:09 p.m. on March 15. It was contained on March 20 at 6:00 p.m. Saturday morning Cal Fire tweeted that two firefighters had suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze.

Fire crews were able to save two threatened structures during their efforts.

“There was some erratic winds that kind of played havoc with our abilities to contain,” said Battalion Chief Bonifacio De La Cruz with Cal Fire Riverside County Fire.

IID shut down power in the area during the firefighting efforts.

“The whole place was fully involved and I did see these palm trees that were just exploding like Christmas trees, all in a row,” Stephen Baumbach of Palm Springs told News Channel 3.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
