Residents speak out after Cathedral City man shot and killed
Residents in the Dream Homes neighborhood in Cathedral City are speaking out after a 23-year-old was shot and killed there Monday night.
Daniel Garcia, 23, of Cathedral City was identified as the victim of the deadly shooting, which happened on the 67100 block of Santa Barbara Drive after 8 p.m. Monday.
The shooting happened just outside Anne Milan’s home, where she had been pushing her daughter on a swnig in the front yard just prior.
“This street is very calm,” Milan said. “It’s nice to go outside and take a walk but when this stuff happens you just don’t know.”
According to a news release by the Cathedral City Police Department, Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics attempted to save his life.
“That’s 23 years old,” said neighbor Juan Sotlo. “That’s a kid!”
Friends and family began laying a memorial for Garcia, with flowers, candles and even cans of beer.
Neighbors offered their prayers. “I hope he is in another place he’s gonna be in peace,” Sotlo said.
Milan said something guided her inside from pushing her daughter on the swing just before the shooting happened Monday. Now she’s concerned about the safety of her kids.
“I cant rollerblade with my daughter anymore. I cant ride a bike with either with her,” Milan said. “When it starts getting dark just get my kids inside.”
A GoFundMe has been set up for Garcia — click here if you’d like to help.
