5 people injured in blast

Five people suffered minor injuries when a generator beneath a downtown building exploded Thursday night.

The explosion occurred at 10:17 p.m. at 811 S. Flower St., Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The 19-story building was believed to have suffered “significant” structural damage, Humphrey said.

A fire that broke out after the explosion was quickly extinguished, Humphrey said.

The five victims’ injuries were non-life-threatening, Humphrey said.

The explosion caused a momentary power outage at Staples Center where a
concert by Shania Twain was underway, according to arena officials.
