Strange Cloud Hovers Over Coachella Valley
News Channel 3 was inundated with calls Tuesday night from concerned residents who saw a spectacular sight in the sky.
A massive cloud formation looked like a tornado was about to touch down.
News Channel 3 Chief Meteorologist Ginger Jefferies set it straight. She says it was a Lenticular cloud.
Lenticular clouds are common in areas near mountains. They happen when high winds whip down the mountainside and created rotation with the moisture in the clouds.
They’re different from tornadoes because there is no rotation in the atmosphere.
Still, it provided for a lot of picture taking, and a lot of talking amongst local residents.
