Supreme Court Says ‘Mojave Cross’ Can Stay
A controversial cross in the Mojave Desert can stay put.
It’s a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
This morning, justices ruled a federal court went too far in ordering the removal of a congressionally endorsed war memorial cross.
The cross on Sunrise Rock honors World War I soldiers and has been there for 75 years.
An appeals court ruled it unconstitutional, saying it didn’t matter that the government transferred the land on which the cross sits to private ownership.
The cross has been covered by a plywood box for several years now.
The justices say the federal judges didn’t put enough weight on the fact that the land had been transferred to private ownership.
