Border Patrol Officer Injured Near Interstate 10
A U.S. Border Patrol agent was attacked Monday while making a traffic stop along Interstate 10 East, and a California Highway Patrol officer was wrestled to the ground earlier in the day while serving a notice in Thousand Palms.
Both incidents sent other law enforcement agencies to the scenes to prevent any further escalation.
The border patrol agent sustained at least a dislocated shoulder, according to authorities.
He was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The CHP officer involved in the Thousand Palms incident is okay but that’s only because her collegues helped out.
“We all have emergency response dispatchers that will dispatch those particular officer that are close in that area to that incident,” said Officer Tami Low, who waswrestled to the ground at around 2:30 p.m. while serving a notice to impound an RV at a home in Thousand Palms.
Two women took her down.
“The officer that gives the call, it will go through a dispatching center, whether it be the border patrol dispatching center, and then the border patrol would dispatch to local law enforcement aganecies,” said low.
Just before 3 p.m. a border patrol agent was assaulted while making a traffic stop along Interstate 10 East near Highway 111.
He stopped a car just a mile west of the Whitewater exit.
Three people were in the car.
Shortly after the stop, an altercation broke out, leaving the border patrol agent injured in the desert.
“If we don’t get there to help quickly then things can escalate into even more unfortunately lethal aspects of an officer needs assistance call,” said Low.
California Highway Patrol was one of several agencies that assisted border patrol on the Interstate 10 incident.
The interstate was shutdown in the area for more than 20 minutes which allowed the agent to be airlifted to the hospital for treatment.
“Whether it’s a local police department, or Highway Patrol or Sheriff’s Department, those officers are going to be responding in respect to help that officer and also to minimize injury,” said Low.
Low is in good condition following her incident.
The women who attacked her were taken into custody.
Two of the three suspects involved in the I-10 attack were arrested but one suspect is still at-large.
