City and County of Riverside Step In To Help Homeless During Cold Nights
Overnight temperatures have dipped into the 30s, and that means living on the streets of any desert city can be brutal if not deadly.
Starting Wednesday, the cold weather shelter in Riverside will begin serving the homeless. Seventy-two additional beds are being placed in service to provide more capacity during the coldest, wettest months of the year.
The shelter will stay open through April 15, 2011.
The shelter is open seven days a week and people seeking shelter may arrive for check in at 5 p.m. each day. Beds are assigned on a first come, first served basis. In addition to a safe and warm place to sleep, shelter guests are offered a hot meal in the evening, breakfast and shower facilities. Case management services are available for those interested in more comprehensive services.

A 2009 survey by Riverside County determined that on any given night, 3,366 homeless people in the county need a place to sleep.
The shelter is paid for by the city and County of Riverside.
