CVHS Freshmen Get New Tablet Computers For Their Hard Work
Roman Soliz checks out the latest gadget to fall in his hands: a new tablet computer.
He and more than 250 of his freshman classmates will be getting one during a special ceremony on Wednesday.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, this [tablet] is a 10, and my computer is a 1,” he said.
The tablet is the school’s way of rewarding students for accomplishing goals. The program is known as “Operation Graduation” — now in its second year.
Administrators believe keeping students motivated will help them graduate.
Their families support the idea.
“For some of them, this is the first tech tool they have in the house,” said Principal Mary Velasco. “So, they may not be aware of all it can do. But, they are aware of the importance of it.”
In order to earn their prize, each student had to fulfill what’s known as “The Four A’s”: achieve a minimum 2.5 GPA in ACADEMICS; maintain a 95% ATTENDANCE rate; participate in at least 20 hours in school ACTIVITIES; and exhibit a good ATTITUDE with no school suspensions.
Francisco Molina, who did not qualify for the tablet, says attendance was his biggest challenge.
“I’m not a morning person. I can’t wake up,” he said. “I miss the bus. I always end up having to walk to school a few times.”
Some students say the tablet will help them stay on top of things at a time when education is competitive..
“My mom’s always pushing me to have straight A’s, and it’s hard,” said Katya Avendano. “But, it’s worth it in the end because she just wants a better life for me.”
Private donations financed the tablets.
