Loretta Young To Be Honored With Star In Palm Springs
Legendary actress Loretta Young, perhaps best-known for her Academy Award-winning performance in the 1947 film “The Farmer’s Daughter” and her 1950s television show, will be honored on Thursday with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
Young had a long history with the Coachella Valley, according to Walk of Stars researchers.
At the age of 16, Young was discovered in Palm Springs during a publicity junket while staying at the infamous El Mirador Hotel, which is now Desert Regional Medical Center.
Over the years, her fame skyrocketed, and so did her trips to the desert to escape Hollywood for some rest and relaxation.
With her close friend, the late Jane Wyman, Young attended St. Louis Catholic Church in Cathedral City, and also arranged for a retired priest to say daily mass in the chapel at Desert Regional, which the hospital dedicated for her in 2002.
Young passed away in August of 2000.
“The City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Walk of Stars are proud to honor the remarkable Loretta Young with a prestigious Golden Palm Star,” said Palm Springs Mayor Pro-Tem Lee Weigel. “For more than seven decades, Loretta Young was not only a tremendous presence on the silver screen, she was a tremendous presence in the Palm Springs community and we are thrilled to pay tribute to her for her extraordinary talent and generosity.”
The star dedication ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. at 121 S. Palm Canyon Drive, and will be hosted by Weigel and Robert Alexander, President of the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
