Car Crash Sparks Police Search for Suspects
An SUV sped at an estimated 100 miles per hour down a residential Cathedral City street, smashed into a car pulling into a driveway, and the SUV occupants pulled a gun to intimidate witnesses, a police sergeant said today.
The collision occurred at 8:17 p.m. Friday in the 28700 block of Landau Boulevard, near the Desert Princess Resort and Country Club.
The victim, whose name was withheld, was pulling into the driveway of a house when his vehicle was struck by a Chevy Tahoe, Sgt. Corwin de Veas said. Witnesses to the crash estimated the Tahoe was traveling at around 100 mph, he said.
Three men, described as Hispanic males in their 20s, stepped out of the Tahoe and brandished a handgun. They threatened local residents and told them to stay back, de Veas said. The suspects ran into the night.
Cathedral City Firefighters used heavy cutting equipment to free the victim from his vehicle. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with what police said were “major” injuries.
Police believed alcohol may have been involved in the collision, de Veas said. An investigation was ongoing.
