Gas Fire Burns Cathedral City Mobile Home
A fire broke out at a Cathedral City home Saturday afternoon, according to fire officials.
It started around 2:40 p.m. at a mobile home at 345 Via Don Benito, in the Date Palm Country Club.
A man was transfering gas from a generator to a storage container, when some of it spilled and somehow caught fire.
The flames originated in the back of his truck, but soon spread to his home.
“Both the home and the home owner’s vehicle were pretty much engulfed in flames by the time the fire trucks arrived,” according to witness Paul Kleinschmidt via Newsline 3.
Nearby homes were evacuted as a precaution.
Firefighters contained the flames, but not before they damaged about 50% of the home. But they did not spread to surrounding buildings.
The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor burn injuries. His wife, who was also home at the time, was not hurt. The family dog also escaped unharmed.
“Neighbors were relieved that Buster, the dog, made it out of the burning home,” according to Kleinschmidt.
Crews remained on scene for a couple hours to watch for any flare ups.
Power also went out on the street for a few hours.
