Palm Springs police investigate another pipe bomb

A man walking along Verona Road in Palm Springs found a suspicious looking device Saturday morning, according to police.

The person called authorities around 9:50 a.m. saying he saw something resembling a pipe bomb on the north side of the street under a mailbox, said Sgt. Mike Kovaleff.

Police sent out an email alert to residents urging them to avoid the intersections of North Farrell and Volturno, Valmy and Vincentia and Vincentia and Volturno.

Officers closed off those streets as a precaution. No evacuations were ordered, Kovaleff said.

People in their homes had thechoice to either leave for three hours or stay inside in the back of their residence until police clear the scene.

The device on Saturday appeared to be made of metal, similar to others found in the city earlier this week.

Five others were found near the intersection of San Rafael and Indian Canyon.

A man out walking said he found one on Tuesday.

When he showed it to his son the next day, his son took it to the police station and officials disposed of it.

Then on Thursday the same man found another device in the same area along San Rafael.

This time he called police who found two more devices, bringing the total to five found along that street.

Investigators shut down the area for several hours while they took care of the devices and searched for any more that may have been in the immediate area.

Their search turned up empty.

Police are still trying to figure out who is responsible for all of these pipe bombs.

A $10,000 reward is now being offered for any tips leading to an arrest in this case.
