$5 million fire station opens in Mecca

A new fire stationopened Tuesday in Mecca. It’spart of Riverside County’s $54 million investment in the east valley community.

The $5 millionstate-of-the-art facility replaces old station 40, which was built in 1952.

The new stationon Avenue 66is in the heart of Meccaand should improve response times.If the station had been up and running during last weeks flooding, it would have been used as an emergency command center.

“Itright here in the center of the county complex in Meccaand we would have been able to deal more efficiently with what’s going on,” said Fire Chief John Hawkins of CAL FIRE. “We would have also insured electrical power because of the electrical generator here.”

Five firefighterswill be on duty 24/7 at the new station,manning one engine and a medic squad vehicle.

New station 40 is scheduled to befully operational by Sept. 30.
