Governor says online is the way
California Gov. Jerry Brown is set to speak at a San Jose State University event where campus officials plan to announce an online education initiative. Brown is scheduled to appear at Tuesday’s news conference about San Jose State’s partnership with a Silicon Valley company that specializes in so-called massive open online courses, also known as MOOCs. Officials say the new pilot program will help broaden access to higher education by making more courses available online. The Democratic governor has been calling on California’s public universities to expand use of digital technologies to help reduce expenses and allow more students to attend college. Brown has proposed giving state colleges more money. In return, he wants them to hold down costs, stop raising tuition and embrace online learning.
