Police shoot and kill Indio man, details of shooting still a mystery
As police investigators continue to piece together what happened late Thursday night that lead an Indio Police officer to shoot and kill a man riding a bike, the Coroner’s office is releasing more details about the victim.
According the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the man shot and killed was 23 year old Alejandro Rendon, of Indio. The Coroner’s report says he died at Eisenhower hospital early Friday morning after being shot by a police officer.
Indio Police says the shooting happened at 82400 Miles Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Indio Police Public Information Officer Ben Guitron says an officer saw Rendon on a bicycle and tried to stop him. Rendon reportedly sped off from the officer. The officer located Rendon a short time later and the officer involved shooting occurred. Police say they are still investigating what exactly led up to the shooting and that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is taking over the investigation.
Indio police say the officer who shot and killed Rendon was not hurt in the deadly altercation. Miles Avenue between Palm and Arabia was closed until about noon Friday for the investigation.
