Police name 2nd suspect in deadly street racing crash
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has released the name, of the second suspect, accused of causing the death of a Rancho Mirage woman and injuring her husband in what police are calling a case of street racing gone bad. The accident happened on June 18th on Highway 111 and Dunes View Road in Rancho Mirage.
The Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday named 31-year old Wade Klinton Wheeler, of Rancho Mirage as the 2nd suspect. Wheeler is accused along with Scott Bahls of racing their BMW’s down Highway 111 causing the deadly crash.
Barbara Schmitz died from injuries she sustained during the crash. Her husband Gerald suffered major injuries and was treated at a hospital and later released.
Wheeler was not arrested at the time of the crash, but was taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries caused by the crash. Bahls was arrested the day of the crash and has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. Wheeler has not been officially charged or arrested, that will be up to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
