Highland residents get $8.5m for mudslide damage

Authorities have agreed to pay $8.5 million to residents of a San Bernardino County community that was buried by a mudslide in 2010.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says the county and the city of Highland agreed to settle with about 150 residents last month. A judge dismissed their lawsuit on Wednesday.

Mud ran through the town 60 miles east of Los Angeles and surrounded or inundated about 70 homes in December 2010 following days of rain.

The residents sued, arguing the city and county failed to make needed improvements to a storm drainage system.

County spokeswoman Felisa Cardona says the county didn’t acknowledge any liability and the settlement was made for financial reasons.

She also says the county has planned improvements to the system.
